Baseball Has Started, So. . .

Baseball hasn't really done much but pause this year, but the games have started. We lost our opener to Mt. Whitney 8-4. No shame in playing well against a bigger school, and except for the 4 unearned runs we gave up in the 2nd inning, we played them pretty even. This friendly rivalry has been played for as long as I remember even as Whitney has grown and Exeter hasn't. It is one of the places where you can go watch a high school baseball game and see a game, not a circus with catcalls from one dugout to the other, players trying to one-up an opponent and such antics that bespoil the game. We even had former coaching colleages, that refuse to go to games because of the garbage at some games, show up for this one. I hope it is a testament to what good coaches can give to young men.

I have to give a BIG Thank You to Digby. Darren and I have known each other since we were 4 and 5 and his family moved in across the street. His brother, my brother, he and I butted heads, contested games and generally grew up together. They moved to Visalia when their father took the baseball job at COS, but our friendship continued. Eventually all four of us played baseball for COS and their father. For a time there was at least 2 or 3 of us on the team together. As adults we continue to work together. As he is the local field expert, I have consulted him on many occasions about our field. He has done work on our field gratis on numerous occasions, including the direction with our last re-sodding project.

This last Thursday night he out did himself. In front of our dugout he painted a baseball with the 7 in the center. Before the game he had the announcer read a description of Jesus Banuelos and his accomplishments at EUHS and then there was a moment of silence. There wasn't a dry eye amongst the coaches in the Exeter dugout.

Good luck this year Steve! How many Jr.'s and Sr.'s make up your varsity squad? Just wondering if our "younger trend" here in the South is the same way out West.

Trey,
Currently we have 14 on the Varsity and 17 on the JV's. Of the 14, 7 are Sr.'s, 3 are Jr.'s and 4 are Soph's. Usually not this many sophomores.

We lost our Freshman team a few years ago to budget and other reasons. Since then a strange trend has seemed to happen. A player won't come out as a freshman because they will have to compete with sophomores for a spot on the JV's. They then come out as soph's, but they miss a year of experience. This has hurt the program overall. We end up playing seniors, but they really are juniors experience wise. The boys don't want to compete. Is that what you are seeing also?
