Knife Project, Part 2

In March I started this knife project to refurbish a knife I received from my father. It's a Robeson Shuredge #20 he got from an uncle. This is the beginning and what I wrote in March.

I bored out some olive and walnut wood I had to make the rough handle and glued it to the knife tang. This is the result of that.

I then cut away the wood and roughed out the handle with a bandsaw.

I don't have any pictures yet, but I have started filing with a rasp and file to further refine the shape of the handle. I hope to find a bench sander to further shape the handle or I will use a belt sander I have.

If you look closely there is a hole towards the end of the handle. I measured and drilled out the wood to match a hole in the tang. I hope to place a brass rivet through the hole to anchor the handle more to the tang. I'm curious if I really need the brass. Could I use a contrasting dowel of walnut? What are your thoughts?

Use the brass. You should be able to use the belt sander effectively. Just turn it on its side and shape away. I really want to see the finished project! Good luck!!

Thanks, Trey. I'm also interested how this will end. I left the blade the original 5" and will try my hand at a smaller blade later.

Thanks for the advice.

Cool project, Steve! You must have made an accurate template before you added the wood, to drill the hole for the brass pin.

Raandy,

I used a pencil to draw an outline of the tang on the outside of the wood. I tried to be careful about getting it correct. When I drilled I used a small drill bit to make sure I hit the hole, then drilled with a bigger bit after I knew I had hit the hole. Hopefully I can get some time soon to finish the knife.
