Recently our neighbor gave us some rainbow trout he had caught at Huntington Lake. When I was in Boy Scouts we went to camp at Huntington and used it for a jumping off point for many backpacking trips. I have many fond memories including the time my father, myself and my three sons camped there. It was the only time the boys camped with their grandfather.
I was never a big fisherman. When backpacking I carried a pole and accouterments, but usually would read instead. I did acquire a taste for trout as my hiking mates usually caught more than they needed to. We even built a smoker one trip to salt and smoke the fish.
So when offered these trout, I jumped at the chance. Except I don't do the cooking in our house. Sorry, Dear. I do need to pick up that ball sometime. Maureen had never cook trout before. My vague recollection was butter and corn flakes or corn meal. Fortunately Maureen prevailed and marinated the fish in a garlic butter paste and grilled them on a grill pan.
It was a great meal, and much better than the fish tacos I suggested. I have been thinking of taking up fishing to supplement our home raised food. Fish is plentiful and safe around here and the skill of fishing would definitely be useful.
