Last week was homecoming, and for us still stuck in high school it is always received with some anxiety. The students usually take it one of two ways. Those that are involved or want to be involved are excited. They dress up in the appropriate costume for each day and yell at the rally and generally have some fun. For those that don't get involved it's another week watching the "weird" students dress up and act like they control the world. They reassure themselves they re getting the better deal because they get Friday afternoon off with the minimum day.
This year there was the beginning of a new tradition, Senior Sunrise. The Seniors gathered at 'O Dark Hundred to drink coffee and juice, eat breakfast burritos and sweet rolls while watching the sun come up over the Sierras. 85+ seniors showed up and it really was a great bonding experience. The mood was festive. There was a large cross section of the 160 member Senior class and everyone seemed to have a good time. Except the sun didn't rise on time.
The Seniors time. Everyone gathered at 6:00am and the food was eaten, songs sang, words spoken and the sun was still reading another script. At 6:58 the sun peeked over the hills and everyone oohed and aahed, and then left. It was a great time and like many events at high schools an idea that will continue for sometime and hopefully become a new tradition.
I went to school that day with a new feeling about this Senior class. They seem together more that some recent classes and there is a core that wants to get things done for others. The craziness of the minimum day was small and the parade was short, but better done. As I watched to parade I thought that this could be a good year.
I then went home and took a nap before the football game.
