Two nights ago we had a regional power outage. A lightening strike hit a transformer at a good sized station, started a fire and an estimated half million people were without power. Some for a few hours most for 5-7 hours, and some are still without power. We were fortunate on this occasion; our power went out for only minutes. It was like they switched us off to make some adjustments and then the power was back on.
It was a great opportunity to get out our provisions and try them out. I think we did well, though it was only for a very short time. Dinner had already been eaten, I had just returned from Back-to-School Night and we talked about what was happening around us.
Today's local paper wrote about the situation and on the Op-Ed page listed comments about what people did during the outage. Most talked about using their laptops, phones or even a car to watch movies or TV with family. Some wrote about watching the neighborhood come alive with kids and families in the street celebrating with an impromptu block party. One comment really caught my eye; "Is Edison going to refund those whose food went bad because the power wasn't on until 5:05 this morning?"
I now have a better understanding of what will be faced when the zombies come out.
