Average Sometimes Gets You Places Good Won't

Deep down, maybe at a young age, I realized I wasn't the best athlete, nor the best student. I was better than some in different areas, not as good in others. As I've aged I've found reasons for some of my averageness. The congenital heart issue translates into being a slower runner and out of breath earlier than others. Not a big deal unless you're an athlete.

I have been fortunate to have been in the presence of some extraordinary people and have learned from them. They have given me the desire to be better or at least average or slightly above average in as many things as I could. If I can't be the best then, be average in as many areas as possible. The Jack-of-many-trades. It helped me in baseball growing up to play different positions. That is a help now that I coach. It also has seemed to help in my teaching career. Being able to fix/clear the paper jam/replace the toner cartridge in the copier has kept me in good stead with the English department ladies. Maybe I see different sides to a story.

Yesterday being the man of many average skills got me something new. I was called into the principal's office to talk with him and received the news of my teaching schedule for next year.
We teach five classes at school and I will be teaching five different classes. Some I have taught before and some not. Everything from Senior English to Reading to ELD to PE.

I just hope it doesn't change three days before school again.
